For years, flat panel TVs have all been about who has the biggest [typical] but these days, it’s all about who has the thinnest.

Sony showed off its really thin Bravia ZX1 last week at the IFA Show 2008 in Berlin just as Philips was introducing its own pared-down TV, the Essence.

It’s not as thin as the Bravia ZX1 but it is clever and at 38mm deep all the way through, it’s been designed to make it easy to hang flush on your wall. Apart from being beautifully designed, the Essence is a 42in 1080p telly with 100Hz picture processing and a 2-millisecond response time. It also weighs just 16.5kg and comes with all you need to mount it perfectly in the box.

There are times when I have blamed my own gaming shortcomings on the controller being too small and fiddly and wishing things were just a little big bigger.

Still, even I think that a console control measuring 4-feet across is taking the mickey. Like this cool, giant-sized SNES controller built by dedicated modders at SCAD Inc. And, yes, it works. Dom Jolie would be so proud.

We all know Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, has suffered some cancer scares in recent years and has, to be fair, been looking a wee bit thinner than is probably healthy but I bet even Steve was surprised to find out yesterday that he had died.

Bloomberg Business News mistakenly sent out Steve’s obituary to thousands of clients online despite it being marked “Hold for release - Do not use’.

In it, there was recent praise about Steve from Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and even some ancient praise by Bill Gates from 1998. Bill said:

It’s been a long time since DVD players were considered cool and even longer since they gave off even a whiff of sex appeal, but LG has certainly injected a little heat into the now bland DVD arena with its DVS450H DVD.

Aside from the crappy name, the player is a real design treat, standing thin and tall with a glossy black finish and minimalist controls. It can stand horizontally or vertically and is suitable for wall mounting, just so everyone can ‘ooh’ over your gadget sense of style.

Most people seem to be pretty content with using Mozilla’s Firefox as a healthy alternative to Internet Explorer, the latest version of which set a new record for the most downloads in a 24-hour period.

Firefox 4 is already being talked about in some circles, with one of the biggest reveals being a substantial speed increase due to the way the browser streamlines the loading of pages.
